Computers Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Computers - Essay Example Seeking to explore Dell Computers in holistic analysis, the following will provide a synopsis of the research undertaken on Dell Computers with an eye to the applicability and functuionalisty of this brand of PC. Perusing the site of Dell Computers and looking at the major price points, I determined that the Dell Vostro 220 was the cheapest option of available while the Dell Precision T7500 was the most expensive model on the market. What are the storage requirements for basic application such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop or Netscape Navigator? Microsoft Office requires a computer and processor of 500 megahertz (MHz) processor or higher; memory which is 256 megabyte (MB) RAM or higher1 and a hard disk space of 1.5 gigabyte (GB). Adobe Photoshop requires a processor which is 1.8GHz or faster, a minimum of 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended) and at least 1GB of available hard-disk space for installation. Finally, Netscape Navigator is no longer on the market, therefore its requirements are irrelevant. The following statement was released by parent company AOL, ââ¬Å"Given AOLs current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel its the right time to end development of Netscape branded software. Read the history page for more details about this decision.â⬠(Microsoft, 2009; Adobe 2009; Netscape, 2009). Looking at both the cheapest as well as the most expensive Dell models presently on the market, it is evident that both the Dell Vostro 220 and the high-end Dell Precision T7500 can support basic software applications such as the Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. When you buy a new software package, why does it state the minimum RAM and hard drive space your computer must have for you to run this program? Essentially this sort of information pertains to the amount of available space

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Physician Assisted Suicide Philosophy Essay
Advantages And Disadvantages Of Physician Assisted Suicide Philosophy Essay Physician assisted-suicide is a personal decision which helps end a sufferings life. Physician assisted-suicide can affect a family physically and mentally. Physician-assisted suicide is the most common type of assisted suicide. Physician assisted-suicide or euthanasia describes any case in which a doctor gives a patient the means to carry out their own suicide. Thisà medical procedureà is most commonly carried out on people withà terminal illnesses. Physician assisted-suicide is a controversial issue worldwide. Physician assisted-suicide has bothà pros and cons. When a person is suffering from aterminal illnessà they are already physically suffering, and should have the right to decide how they want to die. A terminal illness is where either way the person is going to die in a certain amount of time and cant control it. However, physician assisted-suicide is illegal in 47 states, therefore there has to be some type of problem. Physician assisted-suicide should be legal for the people who are already suffering from terminal illnesses. They should not have to suffer anymore. Physician assisted-suicide is necessary in order to put human rights in place. Physician assisted-suicide has many disadvantages. Physician assisted-suicide has many disadvantages because in some states it is not legal and therefore if a physician goes through with the practice the physician will loose their license and can face getting sued. This has happened a few times and is a major problem. Washington and Oregon are currently the only states that permit physician-assisted suicide. Some physicians are not ok with aiding patients in dying, but that is normally not the problem. In source 3 by Reyes B.J, it states that Senate bill 803 prohibitsà mercy killings,à lethal injections, and active euthanasia, and requires patients to receive informed consent. This explains that if a physician or doctor under any circumstances attempts to perform the suicide in states that it is not legal in, then there will be serious legal consequences. The Senate bill 803 protects the act of physician assisted- suicide. Although many people have their doubts about physician assisted-suicide there are many advantages of physician assisted-suicide. One positive thing about physician assisted-suicide is that physician assisted-suicide gives you the right to decide how you would like to die. In source 4 written by Lee M and Alexander Stingl he discusses the Right to dieà debate. The Right to die Debate discusses whether or not people should have the right to die how they want. Many people could argue this because many people have different opinions on this personal issue. This is important because dying is considered a human right. Also ODDA (Oregonsà Death with Dignity Act) permits physicians to assist terminally ill patients to end their own lives by writing prescriptions forà lethal dosesà of medication. This means that in the United States, suicide, is no longer against the law. However Physician assisted-suicide still is not legal all throughout the United States. This is because instead of just the individual taking their own life someone else is involved, this makes the issue more complicated because there are legal actions that have to be put in place if anything happens that isnt supposed to. On the other hand physician assisted-suicide impacts some people differently. For example physician assisted-suicide is against the teachings of many religions, such as Catholicism, and some people feel as if it is unfair and unnecessary and against human morals. It is against some religions because physician assisted-suicide is not mentioned in religious readings for example the bible, and God does not believe in physician assisted-suicide. John Pearson writes about how legalizing physician assisted-suicide is unnecessary and painful, both physically and emotionally. If suicide was right then it would have been discovered throughout the ages by the great thinkers in law, ethics, and philosophy. If suicide was right it would have been mentioned in the bible and thats the reason that it is not classified as necessary and why people think it is against certain religions. The termà Euthanasiaà was taken from the Greek word easy death. This is because it provides a quick andà painless death. In some scenarios physician assisted-suicide is best. One example of a scenario where physician assisted-suicide was best, was for Sandra Wiener. This 64 year old woman was lucky to die how she wanted. This particular woman prepared for her own death. Her physician described physician assisted-suicide as an unmentionable, intensely private procedure. Even though the 64 year old knew that what was being done was illegal at the time, her physician still carried out with the procedure. Doing this, she was committing a class E felony. However, it was best for Sandra Wiener, because she was terminally ill and suffering. In the eyes of the law, there have only been 3 acceptable ways involved with taking a life. Killing in self-defense, killing in war, and in the case of capital punishment. Physician assisted-suicide has never been looked upon as right. Many persons who want to legalize assisted suicide probably never looked at the risks that could happen if assisted suicide is legalized. If assisted suicide was legal fifty years ago, we wouldnt have some of the advancements that control pain, nausea, breathlessness and other terminal symptoms, today. Not only that but the money which is obtained from patients that spend a lot on medicine and hospital bills would cease to exist if physician assisted-suicide was legal Some diseases that were terminal a few years ago are cured by newly developed treatments. If we accept assisted suicide now, we might delay the discovery of effective treatments for those diseases that are now terminal. What about the already corrupt society of America? Todays citizens mi ght not be as honorable as one might wish when it comes to collecting on insurance policies and wills. With assisted suicide legalized, how would one regard the suspicious death of a terminally ill individual within the family? Physician-assisted suicide is a term often used to describe the provisions of the ODDA (Oregons Death with Dignity Act) although actions taken within the law do not constitute suicide, physician assisted-suicide, orà mercy killingà or homicide. Many groups that advocate for the rights of the disabled are against the legalization of physician assisted-suicide. This is because their objection stems largely from what they see as a history of medical discrimination against the disabled particularly the disabled poor. They support a group called Not dead yet. This group is largely against physician assisted-suicide. In the article written by Ann Jackson, she explains the positive outcomes of physician assisted-suicide. In 1997 there was a repeal effort. This repeal effort was to make the ODDA( Oregons Death with Dignity Act) effective. In 1998 the act was successfully effective. This was important because this act allowed a terminally-ill resident of the state to ask his or her doctor for a prescription of life-ending medication. This was positive because it allowed terminally ill patients to end their lives without suffering for any longer. With the technology and advancements in medicine today, who is to say that a persons illness couldnt be cured within the next few months or in the near future. Why end a persons life when you never know what could be in store for them. There is always that possibility of a cure coming out before it is too late. There is always that chance. How can someone else know if another person is really experiencingà unbearable pain and suffering? Who gets to be the one to decide or to tell another that their life isnt worth living? The fact is that nobody should be able to dictate what one shall do. People should be responsible for making their own decisions, and if they no longer feel that their decision is right, they have no one else to blame but themselves. They cant blame it on their physician if they do decide that they want to take their own life. Physician assisted- suicide is a very personal decision that should be carefully thought about. Physician-assisted suicide is not taken lightly. This is a very serious medical matter. There are many rules and regulations regarding thisà medical procedure. Many wavers andà consent formsà have to be signed and notarized before undergoing this medical procedure. This medical procedure is a positive procedure for most families who feel as if their loved one is suffering, or has been suffering for to long. To ensure that the patient receives full trust within the doctor there is an oath. Theà Hippocratic Oathà is an oath taken by doctors which ensures that they swear to practice medicine ethically. This ensures that the physician or doctors prescribing the patient with the lethal medicine which kills them, understands what they are doing and ensures that they are doing it correctly. This oath is like a backup consent. If the doctors or physicians are not abiding by this oath they can face serious consequences which could make them loose theirà medical licenseà and even be sentenced to face many years in jail. In source 5 written by Andrew Walter he mentions that the Hippocratic Oath protects the patients when undergoing this medical procedure, Andrew Walter is very true when stating this because it protects the patients and the patients understand what is going to happen during a normal procedure. Overall physician assisted-suicide has both its advantages and disadvantages. Some people believe that physician assisted-suicide is morally wrong and unnecessary, but on the other hand some people think it is the best thing to do and is necessary to move on in life. Either way physician assisted-suicide is a controversial issue and has caused many issues over time. Currentlyà physician assisted suicideà is only legal in 3 states and Hawaii is still trying to make it legal as the fourth state.

Alexandra Bergman in Willa Catherââ¬â¢s O Pioneers Essay -- Willa Cather O
Alexandra Bergman in Willa Catherââ¬â¢s O Pioneers Works Cited Not Included Alexandra Bergmanââ¬â¢s lack of self awareness allows others to forget that she is a woman and, at times, even human, which continuously builds the wall of isolation that surrounds her. As a result, when she reacts to situations as a woman would, rather than as ââ¬Å"sheâ⬠should, those around her donââ¬â¢t know what to make of it. Because she has been such a steady influence for so many years, those around her do not understand that perhaps she did have another dream besides working the land that she seems to care so deeply about. Her brothers in particular are unable to comprehend that Alexandra is a woman and was forced into the life she has lead by their fatherââ¬â¢s fantasy rather than by her own free will. Perhaps the only people who truly understand her dilemma are Ivar and Carl. Ivar is a ââ¬Å"natural manâ⬠and a religious mystic and Carl a man who was unable to make a living from the landââ¬â neither is respected by their peers, and yet they have so me sort of insight to Alexandraââ¬â¢s heart that even she has failed to acknowledge. Alexandraââ¬â¢s walls are brought down only by love: love of her youngest brother, love of the land, and the return of the childhood love she thought was lost to herââ¬â as these loves begin to change her, her outlook on her entire life begins to change and meld into something that only those who actually know who and what she is recognize: a woman. Although Alexandra begins working the land to fulfill her fatherââ¬â¢s dying wish, no one in her early life ever realizes that perhaps she had other dreams and other wishes. ââ¬Å"You feel that, properly, Alexandraââ¬â¢s house is the big out-of-doors, and that it is in the soil that she expresses herself best,â⬠an... ...hemes fed their families, Alexandraââ¬â¢s hope was renewed continually by the promise of Emilââ¬â¢s future. When he dies, her dreams for his future are shattered, but her own are then able to be seen more clearly, without the filter of another person to care for. Ivar allows her to be herself to some extent, and more importantly can talk to her about things that only they can understand, about the land and the earth and the forces that move within it. Finally, Carl comes to his childhood friendââ¬â¢s rescue and reminds her that there is an entire world outside of Nebraska, and in that world she doesnââ¬â¢t always have to be the only one who truly cares. Through all of these menââ¬â¢s influences, Alexandra is in turn optimistic, hopeful, broken, and renewed. Without these changes within her self, she would never come to know exactly who and what she isââ¬â a farmer, a pioneer, and a woman.

Majority Rule and Minority Rights
In a free government system, it can be said that the corner stone is the concept of majority rule and minority rights. The majority is the group of people that is composed of more than half of the entire population that participated in a certain event or in an election. On the other hand, the minority is considered as the subordinate group and is not politically dominant in a given society that is ruled by the concept of majority rules. The president together with all the other officials that are to take the responsibility of governing the country is determined through the votes of the people and whoever has the largest vote takes the position. The election procedures and requirements regarding the election of the president and other officials are under Article 2, Section 2 of the United States Constitution. However, the power that is given to the elected president is also limited and restricted under the same Article. As stated earlier, the representative with the most number of votes will act for the majority whom in the first place was chosen by the majority to be in the position. However, although the elected official represents the majority, the minority still retains the rights given by the government and expects the majority to acknowledge their rights as well. The minority will not remain the minority forever and in every issue and situation. The minority are free to the idea that in order to have a government competent enough, the will of the majority must be fulfilled. It is not only the concept of majority rule that is important not only on the American government but in all democratic government as well but also the concept of minority rights. The rights of the minority must also be acknowledge and protected. To ensure that the minority retains their rights, the constitution has limited the power of the elected officials and embedded in the constitution are certain laws that will guard the rights and interest of the minority. An example would be the I A mendment of the Bill of Rights that secures the rights of individuals within the state regarding matters of religion, press and speech. The IV Amendment also ensures all persons within the state are free from the fear of abuses from law enforcements regarding unreasonable search and as well as seizure of property. In This case not just the right of the minority is protected but the majority as well. Since the majority constitutes the larger population, their interest is respected which also involves decision making. It is also based on the idea that the majority knows what is best for the community as a whole. It is important to guard the rights not just of the majority but of the minority as well. The Constitution ensures that the right of all individuals in the State is respected and protected. Majority rule had been limited in order to ensure that the majority will not oppress the minority therefore protecting the rights of the minority while the majority rules. This is important b ecause the minorities are also people of the State that also contributes to the economic aspect of the State that is important in maintaining and strengthening its power. If the minorities are oppressed there will be divisions within the State, something that is even harder to addressed, even harder than problems that the State encounters with other nations. Conflicts within the state may also result in the fall of the State as a whole, not just economically but in all aspects as well especially in maintaining its power and status. The tension between the concept of majority rule and minority right is always present in every democratic constitution. Thus, it is important for public officials to be able to make decisions on when should the rule and interest of the majority be reduced in order to protect the rights of the minority and when should the right of the minority be restricted in order to avoid the submersion of the majority rule. These questions must be addressed properly to prevent irreparable damage that can be brought on either the majority or the minority. It is important that while the majority has the power, the will and interest of the minority are also considered and valued in order to maintain the peace and good relations of the people within the State as well as the political and social power of the State. As stated earlier, the principle of majority rule over minority right can be clearly observed in politics especially in elections. This principle will again be seen in the 2008 presidential election wherein more than 10 candidates are involved.Whoever gets the vote of the majority will govern the country in the place of the majority. Although the winner will be governing the country, the constitution limits the power given to the elected president in order to protect the rights and interest of the majority whom in the first place do not chose the elected. Another event in which the concept of majority rule and minority right can be seen is in the case of the Jena 6 in Jena, Louisiana. It can be said that racism is a part of the system wherein the white are considered to dominate. In the case of the Jena 6, although white can be said to represent the majority, the rights of the minority are still respected through many the rallies that were performed. This also shows the importance why the right of the minority must be respected and protected, to avoid factions among the members of the community as well as revolt against those who are in the position that were representation of the majority and even to the majority itself. Indeed, the principle of majority rule with respect to minority right is the foundation of every democratic country such as the United States itself. It is also a key for development and unification.ReferencesDavison, B. Compare the Opening and Closing Scenes in Of Mice and Men Essay
Of mice and men is a great novel written by protest writer John Steinbeck. It is a sad story about the life of two migrant ranch workers George and Lennie, and the conflicts between the reality and their relationship and dream. The opening and closing scenes are both set in the same place ââ¬â Salinas River, however readers can sense totally different feelings from these two scenes. In this essay I am going to compare the opening and closing scenes of this novel focus on the following points: 1) the description of nature to evoke feelings, 2) The dialogue, and the way George and Lennie speak to each other, to explore how George change towards Lennie, 3) The dream George and Lennie share, to explore how Steinbeck protests against the reality. The opening scene in of Mice and Men is happy and peaceful compared to the closing scenes. Before the entry of the two main characters, Steinbeck gets the audience involved by describing the idyllic setting: the beautiful, colorful, peaceful and poetic evening in Salinas River. He creates the pleasant atmosphere brilliantly by sensational words like ââ¬Ëdeep and greenââ¬â¢ water, ââ¬Ëyellow sandââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëgolden foothill slopesââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëfresh and greenââ¬â¢ willows, ââ¬Ëmottledââ¬â¢ sycamores. Just like a strong warm visual effect colorful oil-painting, the Willow Pool in Salinas River vividly present to us. It is also a calm peaceful riverside, little creatures like lizard, rabbit, coon, dears, heron are freely and actively wondering on the riverside. The feeling of relaxation in a warm afternoon is evoked and emphasized in depicting. ââ¬Å"The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sandsâ⬠; ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the leaves lie d eep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among themâ⬠¦.â⬠This untainted beauty of the nature and the relaxed serenity atmosphere that Steinbeck wisely opens with tending toward the Romantic. It suggests a purity and perfection senseââ¬â>sense of purity to the reader that associates with the innocence of Lennie; indicates the idealized friendship and the romanticized dream between George and Lennie. On the other hand it helps to emphasize the changing atmosphere when two protagonists enter into the scene. By comparison to the same scene in the closing endingââ¬âscene it hints about the future trouble and the calm before the storm. The setting is also a symbol of a place free from society, a safe sanctuary for Lennie and George, where they can be themselves. Thatââ¬â¢s why George chooses to let Lennie come back here when he meets trouble, and even Lennie is finally killed by George in mercy here, the Salinas River does keep Lennie safe from the torture of being killed curly. The description of the landscape also helps us to develop an understanding of the background of the great depression. ââ¬Å"There is a path through the willows and among the â⬠¦ sycamores, a path beaten hard by boysâ⬠¦., and beaten hard by tramps â⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the limb is worm smooth by men who have sat on it.â⬠Boys working in the ranch swim here and tramps traveling pass here trying to get job, use it as a rest area. It shows the background of great depression, people struggle with financial freedom, they had to drift into the country for jobs in the farming industry. The ending of the novel occurs at the exactly same place where the story started. The landscape is still the same; however they suggest a totally different feeling. ââ¬Å"Already the sun had left the valleyâ⬠; ââ¬Å"by the pool among the mottled sycamores, a pleasant shade had fallenâ⬠. The sunset is normally symbolic the end of life, it is a subtle forebodingââ¬âindication of the impending death of Lennie. The changing landscape in the coming evening is also described in the other three plots. All these plots are following by the description of the chasing people coming nearer. Steinbeck uses the description of setting as an important tool to convey that Lennieââ¬â¢s death is impending. Readers can also notice that the peaceful and untainted atmosphere is replaced by violent ââ¬â a heron ate a snake and waiting for another. The scene is not anymore slow and relaxed; instead ââ¬Å"A far rush of wind sounded and a gust drove through the tops of the trees like a wave.â⬠Dry leaves ââ¬Å"scudded a few feetâ⬠; Things become swift and dramatic; they are signifying the turmoil George and Lennie have and are going to suffer. Apart from using the setting to underline the themes, Steinbeck is also accomplishedââ¬âexcelled in using creatures and their imagery to illustrate the themes and suggest the foreboding on what George and Lennie will suffer. In the opening chapter, as the human footsteps approached, the rabbits ââ¬Å"hurried noiselessly for coverâ⬠; the heron ââ¬Å"labored upâ⬠and ââ¬Å"pound down riverâ⬠. ââ¬Å"For a moment the place was lifelessâ⬠. Creatures like lizards, rabbits, herons, coons, deers are in possession of the peaceful land, however when human being invaded, we can suddenly sense the tension in this scene ââ¬â the dangers can lurkââ¬âappear at every turn, weak creatures can become prey anytime. They are good indications of a predatory world that George and Lennie are in. In the closing chapter, Steinbeck reflects some animals in the first section. He vividly describes the cold, deliberate way a large heron killed a water snake. The unsuspected snake ââ¬Å"glided smoothly up the poolâ⬠, it is totally unaware that ââ¬Å"in the shallowsâ⬠there is a heron stood ââ¬Å"motionlessâ⬠waiting for it. ââ¬Å"A silent head and beak lanced down and plucked it out by the head, and the beak swallowed the little snake while its tail waved franticallyâ⬠. Death of the helpless water snake comes so quickly, surely, and to the unaware. Normally, snake is a symbol of evil, however here it is utterââ¬â>completely helpless, and it is eaten by a heron, which is commonly regarded as a sign of goodness. This dramatic scene implies the helpless and unsuspecting Lennie who will be killed by his best friend -George, who is as cool as the heron (the situation forced George to shoot Lennie quickly). George killed Lennie with mercy, because he knows at least Lennie will die with happiness and without fear like the unaware snake. In the opening chapter of Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck solidly established the character profile for George and Lennie, as well as their relationship. Apart from the description of their physical characteristics, Steinbeck achieves this heavy reliance on the great proportion of direct speech dialogue between George and Lennie. The language that George and Lennie used in their conversation is fairly simple and contains commonly used American slang like ââ¬Å"brangâ⬠, ââ¬Å"would ofâ⬠, ââ¬Å"gonnaâ⬠, ââ¬Å"kindaâ⬠ââ¬Å"for a sackâ⬠, etc. This help to reflect the setting and their down-to-earth uneducated ranch workerââ¬â¢s lifestyle and make an authenticââ¬â>real sense. The relationship between George and Lennie is clearly established right from the beginning of the book when George sternly warns Lennie to stop drinking water from the pool. ââ¬Å"Lennie, for Godââ¬â¢s sake donââ¬â¢t drink so much'â⬠; ââ¬Å"You gonna be sick like you w last night.â⬠ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëyou never oughta drink water when it ainââ¬â¢t runningâ⬠. George said these ââ¬Å"sharplyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"hopelesslyâ⬠. Readers can soon perceiveââ¬â>feel that George is clearly a leader and guardian who guides and protects Lennie. He looks out for Lennieââ¬â¢s safety and instructs him on what to do. He talks to Lennie in a patronizing but a caring way. Whereas, Lennie is a big, half-wit, child-minded person, who is also sweet and loving. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s good,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"You drink some, George. You take a good big drinkâ⬠ââ¬Å"Look, George. Look what I doneâ⬠Just like an innocent child, Lennie enjoys the pure pleasure by drinking and playing the water, and his first thought is to share the pleasure with George. With the plot progression, we got clearer that George is a small but clever, level-headed man. He loves Lennie, takes care of Lennie, guides Lennie, and protects Lennie like a father. He looks after all Lennieââ¬â¢s affairs, even carrying Lennieââ¬â¢s work card for him. He also always bailsââ¬âbail Lennie out of the trouble, or even potential trouble, as he knows Lennie can get himself into trouble very easily. George instructs Lennie ââ¬Å"Get into the brush till I come for youâ⬠if Lennie gets into any trouble. Meanwhile, although George is Lennieââ¬â¢s mentorââ¬âguardian, he also looks up to Lennieââ¬â¢s feeling, respects his behavior with understanding even though sometimes it seems odd. When George found a dead mouse, he takes the dead mouse away from Lennie. This hurts Lennieââ¬â¢ feeling and he starts to whimper. George ââ¬Å"put his hand on Lennieââ¬â¢s shoulderâ⬠to comfort him. He did this for Lennieââ¬â¢s good. ââ¬Å"I ainââ¬â¢t takinââ¬â¢ it away jusââ¬â¢ for meannessâ⬠. That mouse ainââ¬â¢t freshâ⬠¦.you get another mouse thatââ¬â¢s fresh and Iââ¬â¢ll let you keep it a whileâ⬠. He promises Lennie to give a pup for Lennie to pet. ââ¬Å"First chance I get Iââ¬â¢ll give you a pup,â⬠¦Thatââ¬â¢d be better than mice. And you could pet it harder.â⬠He even plans a future with Lennie, ââ¬Å"..weââ¬â¢re gonna get the jack together and weââ¬â¢re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres â⬠¦.â⬠George is also a short-tempered person, he often gets irritated, weary, frustrated with the difficulties of his responsibility for taking care of Lennie, such as Lennieââ¬â¢s forgetfulness. When Lennie forgot where they are heading to, George swears and scolds in anger: ââ¬Å"So you forgot that awready, did you? I gotta tell you again, do I? Jesus Christ, youââ¬â¢re a crazy bastard!â⬠ââ¬Å"The hell with the rabbits. Thatââ¬â¢s all you ever can remember is them rabbits. Of Mice and Men.K. Now you listenâ⬠¦.â⬠The way George treat Lennie is just like the way an overtaxedââ¬âfrustrated parent treats a little boy. Lennie asks for ketchup childishly during the dinner. This innocent request sparkleââ¬âsparkles Georgeââ¬â¢s frustration again. He ââ¬Å"explodedâ⬠his voiced ââ¬Å"furiouslyâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"rose nearly to a shoutâ⬠. He launches a long complaining speech about the difficulties that Lennie brought to him; states that without caring for Lennie he can live a far easier life. In anger George declaresâ⬠If I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job anââ¬â¢ work, anââ¬â¢ no trouble. No mess at allâ⬠¦.â⬠On the other hand, despite Georgeââ¬â¢s harsh, derogatory responses, Lennie never gets annoyed. Becauseââ¬âbecause Lennie looks up to George as an idol, he mimics action of Georgeââ¬â¢s. He loves George and treats him as the most important person in his life. Each time when Lennie realizes he has done something wrong, he always try to please George and quellââ¬âcalm his anger, because he is afraid George will leave him. ââ¬Å"Lennie knelt and looked over the fire at the angry George. And Lennieââ¬â¢s face was drawn with terror.â⬠ââ¬Å"Georgeâ⬠very softly ââ¬Å"I was only foolinââ¬â¢, George. I donââ¬â¢t want no ketchup. I wouldnââ¬â¢t eat no ketchup if it was right here beside me.â⬠When George said if they got ketchup, Lennie can have some, Lennie said ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d leave it all for youâ⬠¦and I wouldnââ¬â¢t touch none of it.â⬠He even suggests he can leave George alone and go live in a cave. Although Lennie is half-witted, he has enough sense to know that George loves him, so he plays with Georgeââ¬â¢s guilty conscience, and sympathy for George to ask him to stay with him. As expected, George feels guilt to his friend as early as when he sees Lennieââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"anguished faceâ⬠. ââ¬Å"I been mean, ainââ¬â¢t I?â⬠he said to Lennie ââ¬Å"I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebodyââ¬â¢d shoot you for a coyote if you was by yourselfâ⬠¦..Your Aunt Clara wouldnââ¬â¢t like you running off by yourself,â⬠¦.â⬠George knows clearly without him his dim-witted friend Lennie cannot survive by his own. Also as a promise to Lennieââ¬â¢s Aunt, George feels responsible to look after Lennie. After Lennie is assured that George will not leave him, he pleads George to recite their familiar dream. On the thought of their dream, Georgeââ¬â¢s voice turns to ââ¬Å"deeperâ⬠and ââ¬Å"rhythmicallyâ⬠. It is very contagious, as a readerââ¬âreaders we are immediately drawn in by the dream, which is just as beautiful as the landscape that Steinbeck describes in the open setting ââ¬â free and idyllic. ââ¬Å"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the worldâ⬠¦.They ainââ¬â¢t got nothing to look ahead to.â⬠ââ¬Å"With us it ainââ¬â¢t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We donââ¬â¢t have toâ⬠¦..But not us.â⬠These important quotes further highlights to us that George is actually a royal, loving, devoted friend rather than father, brother or guidance. Because he is so willing to admit that he appreciates Lennieââ¬â¢s companionship, because he needs Lennie emotionally, they rely on and look after each other. Also he knows it is the companionship and the special strong bond they share that set them apart from other homeless lonely ranch workers, their friendship make a strong support during the hardships and predicaments in the special era. Despite his annoyance, George stays with Lennie by a combination of the motivations of pity, responsibility and gets a company in the hard time. It is these facts that propelââ¬âpush George to stay loyal to Lennie and devotes Lennie through thick and thin. In the closing chapter, readers can soon notice the way George and Lennie talk to each other changes. â⬠ââ¬ËWhat the hell you yellinââ¬â¢ about?'â⬠. When George sees Lennie again in the pool, he still swears, however it is his only way to talk. He turns a lot quieter this time. He is softer to Lennie, without scolding or blaming like before. When he repeats the life he yearns for followed by Lennieââ¬â¢s request, his tone is ââ¬Å"woodenlyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"monotonousâ⬠, with ââ¬Å"no emphasisâ⬠. By contrast, in the opening chapter, his long speech with same content was emotionally rich and lyrical. When George recounts the dream to Lennie again before he shoots Lennie, he struggles to maintain his co mposure and optimism, as at that moment his heart is in despair. However he did try to give Lennie a hope that their dream is achievable and will fulfill soon. ââ¬Å"Everââ¬â¢body gonna be nice to you. Ainââ¬â¢t gonna be no more trouble. Nobbody gonna hurt nobody nor steal fromââ¬â¢ em.â⬠ââ¬Å"Look acrost the river, Lennie, anââ¬â¢ Iââ¬â¢ll tell you so you can almost see itâ⬠. Right before George kills Lennie in mercy, George declares: ââ¬Å"no, Lennie. I ainââ¬â¢t mad. I never been mad, anââ¬â¢ I ainââ¬â¢t now. Thatââ¬â¢s a thing I want ya to know.â⬠This is the finally words George talk to Lennie, in this sentence; we can sense how loving and devoted George is to his friend Lennie. Lennie talks to George with great sense of guilt and intense fear. As he knows he has done another very bad thing. He is still unaware of the bad fate that facing him. What he is afraid of is George will disapprove and leave him this time. He knows every time when he causes trouble, George will complain about his burden, and threaten to leave him. He then plays the trick again to gain sympathy and make sure George wonââ¬â¢t leave him. Different with before, this time George didnââ¬â¢t get irritated, and assure Lennie that he wonââ¬â¢t leave. ââ¬Å"I knowed itâ⬠Lennie cried. ââ¬Å"You ainââ¬â¢t that kindâ⬠. Lennie still holds the childlike faith that George will always be there for him. This assured faith relieves him a lot. Same as the opening in the novel, Lennie further requests George to repeat the dream again, because the dream gives both him and George comfort. George never wants Lennie to be hurt, but in the end he realizes that he is out of options to protect Lennie, the death of Lennie is inevitableââ¬âunavoidable. In order to protect Lennie from suffering tortures in a painful death. George is forced to shoot Lennie while Lennie is occupied with their shared dream of the farm, which is his favorite story and always soothes and comforts him. With the respect, love and responsibility towards Lennie, George has chosen the best option in the situation, and gives Lennie the best gift he can, the gift of peace, which can save Lennie from a hellish life in a forever asylum-dreadful life. One of the main themes in Of Mice and Men is American dreams. During the Great Depression the harsh realities make people lonely and powerless and hopeless, to share a dream of a better place is the only outlet to comfort them and help to transcendââ¬âfrom the troubles they face. Steinbeck introduces this dream for George and Lennie in the very first chapter. ââ¬Å"With us it ainââ¬â¢t like that. We got a future.â⬠- Despite the hard and gruff reality, George is still an idealist and self-motivated man at the beginning of the novel. He believes through their hard working, his dream of ââ¬Å"live off the fatta the lanâ⬠can be achievable , and there is something better up ahead, as he got Lennie. It is Lennie and their strong bond that keep them from the terrible isolation that the other men experience, and gives George a special sense of purpose to strive for. Their friendship sustains their dream and makes it possible. However, with a world filled with harsh adversity and predatoryââ¬âcircumstances, their relationship just canââ¬â¢t simply sustain. George and Lennie are forced to separate tragically. By killing Lennie, George is also forced to shoot his dream, forced to surrender his faith of the Land of Promise. Without Lennie, George is now in loneness and hopelessness, just the same as anyone among the legion of poor, homeless, powerless migrant workers. The tragedy for them is, no matter how hard they work they are doomedââ¬âfated to a life of wandering, no matter how intensely they dream, their dreams can only help transcend their circumstances, but no way to be fulfilled. The faded American dream in the closing chapter sadly shows that a land of freedom, contentment, and safety is not possible to be found in this world, it is only an Eden-like place. Actually, at the end of the opening chapter, when Steinbeck deliberately wrote on the rabbit with different colors which Lennie desired is already a hint of the unrealistic fantasy of George and Lennie. Through the comparison of the opening and ending scenes in Of Mice and Men, we can find that the settings are very important in these two parts, Steinbeck used them to help evoke different feelings and hint about the future troubles, as well as symbolize the main themes. Dialogues between George and Lennie are the main content of these two scenes, they help to characterize the main roles and establish and develop the main themes ââ¬â loneliness, friendship, and dream. Through these main themes Steinbeck portrayed the hardship that ranch workers like George and Lennie encountered during the heartbreaking Depression era. He has succeeded in describing the cruelty and insurmountable -extremely difficult challenges during the Depression.
